How the Google map pack actually picks detailing shops
Three shops get the calls in every city. The other fifteen split the leftovers. Here’s what the three winners have in common — measured across the 37 shops we track daily — and the order to fix things if you’re not one of them.
The map pack: three spots, and roughly 44% of all clicks on a local search.
The three signals, in the order they matter
Google ranks map results on relevance, distance and prominence. That sounds abstract until you translate it into shop terms: what your profile says you do, where the searcher is standing, and how much proof exists that you’re good. You control the first and third completely.
Distance you can’t change without moving the shop. So every point below attacks relevance or prominence — and the shops that win treat both as weekly habits, not one-time setup.
1. Your primary category does the heavy lifting
“Car detailing service” as a primary category ranks for detailing searches. If ceramic coating is 60% of your revenue, your primary should be “Car detailing service” with coating services listed — or, in markets where Google offers it, the more specific category. We’ve moved shops two map positions by changing this single field.
2. Review velocity beats review count
A shop with 180 reviews that stopped getting them in 2024 loses to a shop with 90 reviews arriving four per week. Google reads the trend. The fix is mechanical: every finished job triggers a review request by text, an hour after pickup, while the owner is still admiring the hood.
A shop with 90 reviews arriving four per week beats a shop with 180 that stopped in 2024. Google reads the trend, not the total.
3. Photos of real work, uploaded weekly
Profiles with fresh owner-uploaded photos get measurably more direction requests and calls. Phone shots from the bay outperform professional stock in every account we manage. Three uploads a week is the floor; the winners post after every notable job.
What to fix first: the 30-day order
If you do nothing else this month, do these in order:
- Set the right primary category and fill every service with a real description and price range.
- Turn on automatic review requests after every job — by text, not email.
- Upload ten photos of recent work; schedule three per week from here on.
- Fix your name, address and phone so they match everywhere Google might look.
- Answer every review, good and bad, within 48 hours.
A rank grid from our platform. Position is measured from dozens of points across the city — because the map pack changes block by block.
The part nobody tells you: it’s a habit, not a project
Every item above decays. Photos age, review velocity stalls, a competitor updates their categories. The shops holding the top three spots in our tracker share one trait: someone touches the profile every week. Whether that’s you or us matters less than that it happens.
